Trent Lakes, Ontario was originally inhabited by the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabe people. It was settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. Originally named Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, the township was amalgamated in 1998 and renamed to Trent Lakes in 2013.
Trent Lakes is comprised of Harvey Ward, Galway Ward and Cavendish Ward. Lock 31 in Buckhorn is the only Trent-Severn Waterway lock located within the municipality.
