Kawartha Lakes, Ontario was originally inhabited by the Mississauga Anishinaabe people. It was settled by Europeans in the early 1800s and became a city in 2001. Prior to restructuring as a city, Kawartha Lakes was known as Victoria County.

Bobcaygeon has been hosting a fall fair at the end of September for more than 160 years. Visitors can enjoy competitions, home craft displays by local artisans, music, entertainment, delicious food, animals, and a midway.
Kawartha Lakes is home to numerous parks, public beaches and public boat launches.
The museum dedicated to sharing community histories is located in a historic Gaol that was built in 1863 and continuously used as a correctional institution until February 2003. After remaining closed for a few years, the gaol's doors reopened in 2011 as the museum.
Kawartha Settlers' Village, which was once a prosperous family farm, now houses a captivating assortment of more than 20 historic homes and buildings. Visitors can experience the life of pioneers in the Kawarthas.
This venue, formerly a cattle barn, now serves as a 150-seat theater with an adjacent restaurant. During the summer season, visitors can enjoy a varied lineup of shows, while the rest of the year offers an assorted selection of dramas, murder mysteries, and comedy nights.
