History

Woodland Natives inhabited the area circa 1000 BCE – 1000 CE, followed by Iroquois and Mississaugas circa 1740 CE. Peterborough was incorporated as a town in 1850, with a population of 2,191.

Liftlocks

The highest hydraulic boat lift in the world and an engineering marvel of the Trent-Severn Waterway. The lift lock lifts boats 20 meters from the lower Trent Canal to the upper Kawartha Lakes. Visitors can watch the lift lock in action, take a boat tour, and explore the visitor center.

Farmers' Markets

Peterborough is home to 2 weekly Farmers' Markets -- the Downtown Farmers' Market and the Regional Farmers' Market. Both markets are popular with locals and visitors alike and provide a platform for local farmers and artisans to showcase their products and connect with the community.

Riverside Park & Zoo

Located in Peterborough's North end, Riverside Park & Zoo is the only free-admission zoo in Canada. The park covers an area of 55 acres and features a variety of exhibits and attractions, including a miniature train ride and a splash pad. The zoo is home to over 27 species of animals, including primates, big cats, reptiles, and birds.

Peterborough MusicFest

An annual summer music festival held in Del Crary Park. The festival features a diverse lineup of live music performances, ranging from local and regional artists to internationally acclaimed musicians across a wide range of genres. Admission to the festival is free!

Canadian Canoe Museum

The museum features a vast collection of canoes, kayaks, and paddled watercraft from all around the world, including historic canoes used by indigenous peoples and famous explorers. It offers exhibits, educational programs, and workshops for visitors of all ages.

Parks & Trails

Peterborough is home to more than 100 parks and sports fields. Notable parks include Jackson Park and Beavermead Park & Campground. Multiple major trails run through Peterborough and make the city bike and pedestrian-friendly.

DOWNTOWN

DOWNTOWN PETERBOROUGH

Centrally located and on the shores of the Otonabee River, Downtown Peterborough is known for its many locally-owned shops and restaurants. Visit Little Lake and take in the Centennial fountain while walking the marina.

The main thoroughfares of George and Water Streets run North and South through downtown. The area is bounded by Parkhill Road in the north, Lansdowne Street in the south, the Otonabee River to the east, and Monaghan Road to the west.

Homes in the downtown core are primarily Century homes, multi-family residential and condos. It is a great location for first-time buyers and those looking for investment properties and commercial investment opportunities.

Some key landmarks within downtown include the Peterborough Public Library, Balsillie Family YMCA, Peterborough Memorial Centre, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, the Canadian Canoe Museum, and the Healthy Planet Arena.

OLD WEST END

THE "OLD WEST END"

Peterborough's "Old West End" is a picturesque area just west of downtown. It is primarily large single-family Century homes that preserve the character and charm of the early 1900s. Houses are larger with deep lots. Because of its charm and easy walkability to downtown, this is a highly desired pocket of homes. 

The "Old West End" is bounded by Park Street to the east, Charlotte Street to the north, Monaghan Road to the west, and Sherbrooke Street to the south.

WEST END

THE WEST END

Highly desired amongst young families, the west end of Peterborough is primarily single-family subdivisions with a mix of newer and older construction. The area is home to many great schools, both private and public. On-going new development in the northwest means this is a community on the rise.

The west end is bounded by Lily Lake Road in the north and Lansdowne Road in the south, and from Monaghan in the east to Brealey Road in the west.

Features of the west end include the beautiful and expansive Jackson Park, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), Kawartha Golf & Country Club, the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre, and numerous parks and walking trails.

EAST CITY

EAST CITY

A village within the city, East City has its own unique culture and community within Peterborough. The delicious aroma of the Quaker Oats factory, panoramic views overlooking downtown and Little Lake from the Hunter Street bridge, and its own main street with unique shops and restaurants make East City a sought-after location. Homes in East City are primarily single-family Century homes, Post-War construction, and some condos. With its easy walkability to all amenities, East City is ideal for families, students, retirees and investors alike.

East City is bounded by Parkhill Road to the north to Beavermead Park to the south, and the Otonabee River to the west and Ashburnham Drive to the east.

Some key landmarks within East City include the Hunter Street bridge, Ashburnham Village, Peterborough Lift Lock (Lock 21), Armour Hill, the Rotary Greenway Trail, Rogers Cove, and Beavermead Park & Campground.

NORTH END

THE NORTH END

The North end of Peterborough is primarily subdivisions of single-family homes from the 1960s, with some student rentals and some condos. Traditionally an older demographic, more and more young families are moving into the area. New developments of single-family homes, townhouses and condos have begun to spring up in the University Heights area.

The north end is bounded by Parkhill Road to the south, Woodland Drive to the North, Armour Road to the east and Chemong Road to the west.

Features of the north end include the Riverview Park & Zoo, Trent University, and the Peterborough Golf & Country Club to the northeast.

SOUTH END

THE SOUTH END

The south end of Peterborough is an expansive area that includes single-family homes, condos, townhouses and a large commercial district. The variety of the south end means it's perfect for first-time homeowners and retirees, families, renters and investors alike. Multiple access points to Highway 115 make this a great area for commuters as well.

An exclusive neighbourhood of homes is tucked away along the Otonabee River south of Lansdowne Road. Homes here back onto the river with beautiful water views and private water access. Watch the boats go by from your dock while still being within the city!

The south end is bounded by Lansdowne Street to the north, Hwy 115/7 to the south, River Road/Bensfort Road to the east and Brealey Road/Airport Road to the west.

Features of the area include the Peterborough Municipal Airport, Fleming College, Shorelines Casino Peterborough, and Lansdowne Place Mall.
